Escape Velocity: Why I'm Writing This, and What's Coming Next

Issue #1 of Escape Velocity Weekly

At 5:47 AM this morning, I got a $23 royalty notification while grading papers. That's when it hit me: I'm making money while I sleep, but I'm still trading hours for dollars during the day. Something's backwards here, and I've started building a way out. This newsletter is where I document the climb—in real time.

The Escape Story

I've been teaching for 15 years, building what I called a "side hustle" in secret. For months, I'd wake up at 5 AM to write before my kids stirred, publishing fiction under pen names while pretending I was just an early riser who liked coffee.

Then something clicked. My first taste of real income from KDP changed everything—I went from $0 to $1,000/month in under three months. The numbers were small, but the principle was massive: I could make money without being physically present. So I doubled down, publishing 60 books in 8 weeks using AI tools, building systems that worked while I taught.

But here's what nobody tells you about early success: it doesn't automatically equal ease. The burnout hit hard. The anxiety of juggling two worlds—respectable teacher by day, digital entrepreneur by night—was eating me alive. I realized that making money isn't the same as building freedom.

That's when I decided to build what I call escape velocity—not just income, but a system that could eventually free me from trading time for money altogether.

The Mission of This Newsletter

This isn't a get-rich-quick playbook. It's a real-time log of digital experiments from someone who's figuring it out alongside you. No guru nonsense, no overnight success stories—just honest reports from the trenches. If you've ever tried to build something after putting your kids to bed—or before your boss checks their email—this is for you.

I'll share what works and what flops: AI tools that actually save time, publishing income that builds while you sleep, Gumroad launches that crash and burn, YouTube revivals that might stick this time, and mailing list growth that happens one subscriber at a time.

This is for people who want independence without glamorizing burnout. Who understand that building something real takes time, but also know that the current system—trading hours for dollars indefinitely—isn't sustainable.

One email per week, no spam, just systems, reflections, and progress reports from someone still climbing the mountain.

What's Coming Next

Here's what I'm planning to cover in the next few issues:

How I wrote and published 60 books in 8 weeks using AI (and what I regret about rushing the process)

My $0 Gumroad launch: What went wrong, what I learned, and what's next

The "Lazy Person's Productivity Stack" I actually use to manage multiple income streams without losing my mind

Why Medium might be my new secret weapon for building an audience that actually converts

What This Isn't

Before you dive in, let me be clear about what you won't find here:

This isn't about quitting your job tomorrow. I'm still teaching while I build, and there's no shame in that game.

This isn't about grinding 80-hour weeks. I have two kids and a mortgage. If a system requires me to sacrifice sleep or family time indefinitely, it's not sustainable.

This isn't about get-rich-quick schemes. I'm talking about building assets that compound over time, not chasing the next shiny object.

Let's Do This Together

If you're building your own escape velocity, hit reply and tell me what you're working on. I read every email, and your story might teach me something I hadn't considered.

And if you know someone else trying to break orbit, forward this to them. We're all figuring this out together.

Talk soon, Tony

P.S. - If you're wondering whether this newsletter will stay free, the answer is yes. The goal isn't to monetize you—it's to build something valuable enough that you'll check out my books, courses, and other projects when they make sense for your journey.
